The Kansas Research Nexus corridor, running from Lawrence to Topeka to Manhattan produces about 10,000 college graduates annually creating a strong talent pool from which businesses can draw.

Our communities provide numerous options for finding exactly the employees you need for your business. In addition to the major universities, a number of technical colleges, junior colleges and workforce training programs enhance the skill level of available workers.

The region offers several programs focused on skills training and workforce development. Both state and local organizations provide resources to develop and enhance desired skills. Some of our major workforce development partnerships include:

  • Heartland Works provides skills training, employment data and helps introduce potential employers to the local workforce
  • MAMTC works with business to customize training programs and provide services to help you become more efficient, competitive and profitable.
  • Johnson County Community College offers technical training courses from its location in Douglas County.
  • The Lawrence Workforce Center provides a wide range of services including helping employers find skilled workers and providing training and educational programs.
  • The Flint Hills Job Corps in Manhattan is a no-cost education and career technical training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor.
  • Washburn Institute of Technology assists high school, adult students and business and industry students in developing the skills and knowledge to excel in today's career fields. This training provides a pipeline of qualified, career-minded citizens to fulfill the needs of new and existing businesses in our area
    • Washburn Institute of Technology's new facility prepares workers who can go directly onto the work floor without any further training. This is accomplished through specialized training and the Advanced Systems Technology Program.
  • Manhattan Area Technical College is a technical college located in Manhattan, Kansas. The college offers Associate of Applied Science degrees in nine disciplines, with technical certificate programs in many others including an Advanced Biotechnology Certificate designed for scientists already in the field. While the college serves 10 counties in Northeast Kansas, the primary service areas include: Geary, Riley, Clay, Marshall, Dickinson, and Pottawatomie Counties.
  • Small Business Development Centers located in Lawrence, Manhattan and Topeka offer a wide range of services including training and counseling.
